How to Minimally Refresh Your Living Room for Spring

Every year, Spring welcomes a wonderful, warm change to the seasons that inspires me to mimic its ways. Like most people, I will do a deep clean of my house. However, I like to take a few more steps beyond that, and do a bit of decluttering, organizing, and rearranging my decor for the spring and summer seasons. And this year, I’ve been very blessed to be able to partner with AllModern to be able to share with you my simple steps to this semi-annual regime.

This year, I want to focus on minimalism throughout my living room, which means clean lines, simple textures, and a “less is more” attitude. I feel that minimalism really compliments the season well due to the fact that I am already decluttering everything, and creating an inviting space to breathe, relax, and fully enjoy the return of bright greens, and warm sunshine to our home in Nashville.

To begin your spring refresh, I would start with a few basic tasks. First, start by creating a mood board for the space to get an idea of the direction you wanted to pursue. I found furniture pieces that looked similar to my own or the exact ones, and then paired with with items to purchase, DIY, or for pure inspiration. After that, start your deep cleaning of your space: wash your cushions, blankets, pillows, dust every surface area and wipe it down afterwards, vacuum and wash your floors, etc. Once you’ve prepared your space, and found your styling inspiration, you’re ready to get started.

Tips for Your Room Refresh

Get an Inventory of Your Decor

  • This is something that’s very important to me because I don’t want you to get the idea that a “Spring Refresh” means buying ALL new furniture, rugs, decor, the works. So much of this blog is revolved around repurposing, making and creating, and spending wisely. Why, oh, why would I change my intentions, (more so, my morals), now? Let’s use what we have, let’s make something new, and let’s create a budget for a couple new items that may spark joy to keep our space cozy and relevant. Yes? Hooray! This step also goes hand in hand when you’re creating or referring back to your mood board.

Place your “must-have” items in your space:

  • These will include but are not limited to: large furniture, essentials for your living space (i.e. tv, stereo), any items that spark joy (i.e. family photos/relics, favorite plants, DIYs you want to show off.)

Fill in the empty empty spots:

  • You must be thinking, “Emery…um…what are empty empty spots?” When it comes to minimalism, remember, less is more—meaning we need to give the space room to breathe. The best way to do this is to lean a bit more heavy on the negative, or empty, space. Essentially, there’s a balance that needs to exist, and too much clutter will throw off that balance. A great example is when you go to an art museum or gallery; each art piece has some substantial space between its neighboring piece. This allows you to really take in, and focus on each piece of art, and not be distracted. The same rules apply in minimalism.

Add a little color and a little texture:

  • A lot of minimal rooms carry a lot of white throughout space, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t have color. A small pop of a bold color will actually add to that balance in the space. Too much white can tip the scale and make the room a bit dull. A bit of texture is great for the space too because it adds pattern to a solidified canvas. Stick with patterns that are easy on the eyes though—nothing too distracting.

    Set the mood:

  • I feel like I touch on this one in almost every blog post where I discuss styling a space. To make a room feel inviting, which we definitely want our living room to be, we need to adhere to our five senses:

    • Set some out some stylish candles that when lit offer floral scents to match the smells of Spring.

    • Add comfortable blankets and pillows that aren’t scratchy or too firm.

    • Add some decorative lighting that continues to promote comfort after the sun sets.

    • There is a lot of room for play and imagination with this one.

I have to tell you guys, Ryne, Otis, and I are in love with the minimal adjustments to our space. It feels brand new when in fact, we actually only ordered two new items for our living room, DIY-ed the single stem flowers on our coffee table, repurposed the black side table, and DIY-ed some floating frames for the artwork I painted above the media console. Everything else we already had lying around. If you guys are looking for some affordable new items to refresh your space, AllModern is a great place to peek through. You might recognize a couple items from my mood board in the space, some of which I had purchase way before this year. And that’s because I genuinely love them. A huge amount of gratitude goes out to them for helping me make this space exactly how I envisioned it. Check out the links below to see what items I put in my living room refresh.
